FULL DAY EXCURSIONS

Montenegro Magic

Newly-independent Montenegro has become another Adriatic destination that is really making a name for itself. A wild land where mountains drop straight into the sea and delightful towns such as Kotor, Budva and Montenegro's jewel, Sveti Stefan, cling to the coastline on the route south from the border with Croatia. It is within easy reach of Dubrovnik, which makes it, along with Korcula and Mostar, another must-do excursion that takes you out of Dubrovnik region into other tantalizing areas with their own distinct cultures and histories.

This is a full-day excursion, which usually departs at around 0830 and returns at 1800. The tour includes an English-speaking driver/tour guide. There are stops in the old towns of Perast, Risan, Kotor and Budva as well as optional supplements such as a specialized guide in Kotor and a meal in one of Budva's best fish restaurants. All ferry tickets are included.

DURATION: full day.

Peljesac Wine Trail

A quality wine is more than just a drink. It is an almost magical sensation arising from a harmony of taste, bouquet and texture. Indeed, a glass of wine should be savoured with local specialities which derive from the region around the vineyards the wine originated from. This type of authentic experience is offered on our Peljesac Wine Trail tour.

After a good night’s sleep, you are taken by air-conditioned mini-bus to the peninsula of Peljesac - the most famous region in Croatia for the production of quality red wines.

En route, there will also be a short sightseeing stop at the town of Ston in order to admire its impressive medieval walls and ramparts. Next on the schedule is the Antunovic household in the village of Kuna. This village boasts the prettiest konoba (a kind of combined wine cellar/pub) in the area, a donkey farm and the opportunity to experience a warm Dalmatian welcome. This welcome takes the form of excellent homemade herb brandy, local food and wine of the quality you would not be able to obtain in any of Dubrovnik’s restaurants, nor purchase in the shops.

Afterwards, the tour proceeds through the Dingac Vineyards to the village of Potomlje, a picturesque place in a pretty valley, to visit the Matusko family wine-cellar and enjoy a tasting session of the world-famous Dingac and Postup wines.

On the way back, there is an important stop at Mali Ston, where you will dine in style at one of the best restaurants in Dalmatia, called Bota Sare, and sample the renowned oysters that are cultivated in the nearby Malo More bay.

This is a day filled with unforgettable memories and of course lots of wine-tasting, complete with numerous photo opportunities. You will certainly return to Dubrovnik smiling, happy and full!

DURATION: full day.

Korcula

Reputed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo and one of Croatia's many treasures, is an exquisite town which would be a crime not to visit, especially if you are staying in nearby Dubrovnik.

Our driver will take you up the coast from Dubrovnik, following a route that meanders through the vineyards and valleys of the Peljesac Peninsula (which is only joined to the mainland by a thin sliver of land) and finishes at the coastal town of Orebic. A trip to the island and city of Korcula is an ideal full-day excursion as it takes approximately 2 hours from Dubrovnik to Orebic and then around 20 mins by ferry across the channel to Korcula Town.

Our professional, licensed guide will then meet you off the ferry to take you on a tour of the city, its Old Towns and some of the more interesting museums. The price includes transfer to Orebic, ferry tickets, guide and museum entrances.

Medugorje - experience the peace and spirituality of one of Europe’s most holy places.

Since the Virgin Mary appeared to six children on a hillside in 1981, the small town of Medugorje has become one of the most significant and meaningful sites for pilgrimage in Europe. Visited by more than 1 million people every year, the town attracts visitors from across the world who come to hear mass at the beautiful St. James church, make the journey up Cross Mountain to pray and give thanks, and quietly reflect in the Garden of Contemplation.

This tour allows visitors to experience first hand the feelings of peace and faith that surround Medugorje. An experienced local guide will take you on a journey through the town, allowing you to take in the many religious sites including the church, its beautiful gardens and the surrounding hills. The guide will also provide you with a detailed overview of the miracles which are said to have happened in this sacred place, from the original apparition to today.

Whilst this tour will have particular meaning for Catholic visitors, the story of Medugorje will also invoke a sense of awe and fascination in all who visit.

HALF DAY EXCURSIONS

Scenic Road Trip

If you would like a bird’s-eye view of Dubrovnik and a tour of the most impressive panoramic views of this region of Dalmatia, then this “road trip” offers these opportunities and more.

Our English-speaking driver/guide will pick you up and take you on a circuit around the hills and heights above Dubrovnik. Stopping at several view points along the way, you will be driven up Srd hill (400 metres above the Old Town), through the areas where the front line was located during the 1990s war, including the site of the cable-car route which was destroyed in the conflict.

Srd hill’s peak offers unbeatable views down into the city, the Zupa Dubrovacka valley and across the Adriatic Sea to islands such as nearby Lokrum, the Elaphite isles and beyond. Be sure to bring a camera and lots of film (or a digital camera with plenty of memory)!

This tour has proven to be an excellent choice for visitors coming into Dubrovnik off a cruise ship or staying in hotel accommodation. It is also an excellent combination together with one of our Old Town walking tours as the Scenic Road Trip sets the scene perfectly before you explore deeper into the city itself.

Story about the war

The Balkans have often been perceived as a restless corner of Europe and many who look into the underlying reasons behind the recent conflicts, including the aggression against Dubrovnik, feel that the issues are too complex to understand. This tour will give you a bird’s-eye view of Dubrovnik and take you on a circuit around the heights above the city, where many of the landmarks of the war are located.

Stopping at several view points along the way, you will be driven up Srd hill (400 metres above the Old Town), through the old front line, including the site of the cable-car route which was destroyed in the conflict. Other stops include Zarkovica, where the besieging Serb and Montenegrin forces were based, and the fortress where the Croatian defenders housed themselves. The stories, as related by your guide, are sobering, heroic and, at times, beyond belief.

All these places also offer unbeatable views down into the city, the Zupa Dubrovacka valley and across the Adriatic Sea to islands such as nearby Lokrum, the Elaphite isles and beyond. Be sure to bring a camera and lots of film (or a digital camera with plenty of memory)!

Trsteno Arboretum and historic town of Ston

Combining cultural, botanical and gastronomic revelations, this tour of the historic town of Ston and the Trsteno Arboretum has something for everyone.

The tour begins with a leisurely stroll through Trsteno's renowned arboretum. At over 500 years old and housing more than 300 species of exotic tree and plant life, the arborteum is widely acknowledged as one of the finest gardens in Europe. During the tour you'll have a chance to take in the magnificent scenery, including the summer manor, pavillion, aquaduct and Baroque fountain and will also be able to view the centerpiece of the arboretum, two ancient Oriental Plane trees. Standing at almost 60m tall, the trees are the only specimens of their kind in Europe and make a wonderful photo opportunity.

After an exploration of the botanical garden, the tour moves to Ston. This historic town is surrounded by a 5km long fortified wall, the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China, which was originally erected in 1358 to protect the town. Now, over 20 towers still remain and the wall represents an impressive flashback to the past. Your guide will accompany you as you wander around the pretty old town, exploring the churches and varied architecture, before walking around a section of the wall and enjoying the panoramic views.

Having worked up your appetite, your tour then moves on to Ston's ancient salt pans which are still being worked today after over 2,000 years and, unusually, are home to an oyster farm. Thanks to the unique ecological balance of the area, the farm grows a variety of oyster that have died out elsewhere making these a truly special delicacy. The tour ends with a visit to one of the best restaurants in the area for a three course fish lunch and, of course, a well-earned tasting of the exclusive oysters!

Small town of Cavtat and Konavle region

Cavtat and Konavle come together naturally as a combined tour. Cavtat's past, present and future are very closely tied to Dubrovnik's and this coastal town is a delight - its Old Town has an intriguing network of streets and cobbled alleys whereas the harbour and promenade are a must.

After visiting Cavtat, the tour takes you on a visit through some of the attractive villages in Konavle. This area is actually a plain skirted by the southern mountains of Herzegovina and Montenegro and its small population lives in some 32 villages scattered across this south-easterly tip of Croatia.

Konavle's folk traditions and way of life are still thriving in may of these settlements and we offer you the chance to taste of a true culinary tradition in one of the villages' authentic restaurants. This lunch's centrepiece is a mouth-water dish – the finest lamb slowly roasted under a thick iron pan covered in hot coals.*

Folklore Tour of Čilipi

The Folklore Tour of Čilipi is perfect for those wishing to experience a taste of Croatia's past. Located in the picturesque Konavle valley, this small town, badly damaged during the war, has now been restored to its charming and hospitable best.

Here folklore is a way of life and this tour provides the opportunity to experience firsthand Čilipi's traditional customs and rich heritage. The tour will begin with a welcome drink and a chance to see Čilipi's beautiful St Nicholas' church which dominates the main square and dates back to the fifteenth century. Mass will be open to those who wish to attend, followed by a walk through the village with your guide. Here you'll be able to wander round the stalls where locals offer home made traditional goods and handicrafts that make wonderful souvenirs.

The real highlights of this tour are, of course, the traditional folk dancing performances which take place every Sunday in front of the church. Locals revel in dressing up in their traditional costumes and performing old songs and dances, and over time the festivities have come to define the town. You'll be enthralled by the dancers' energy and enthusiasm and get a real sense of the custom and culture that are at the heart of this area. You may even be invited to join in making this a truly memorable trip!
