WALKING IN DUBROVNIK

From the mazy side streets of the Old City to the wild and untouched beauty of the mountain ranges, Dubrovnik is a walker’s paradise. If you prefer just to promenade along the Stradun or hike in the wilderness there is something for everyone.
Dubrovnik is a city built to be seen on foot. The Old City is like a labyrinth, every corner brings a new surprise and every alley a new destination. You can literally walk for hours inside the city walls and continually discover something different. The many off-beat cafés and bars allow you to relax your weary legs and admire a new view. Walking around the 1.9 km long city walls gives you a bird’s eye view and, if you can survive the heat, is a perfect way to get a feel for the layout. I would personally recommend walking the walls either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the midday sun. There are reportedly plans to open the walls at night and if this happens it would bring a new dimension. The main street, Stradun, is the place to amble and be seen. In the long summer nights it sometimes resembles a catwalk as Dubrovnik’s youth and tourists alike parade. Out of the city the Lapad peninsular has a beautiful coastal path that winds it way around the pine covered point. There are a number of panoramic observation points on the walk and you are always close to sea if you fancy a dip. My favourite walk is to the south east of the city. Above the Hotel Belvedere, destroyed in the Homeland War, is an old road that used to be the main road to the south of the county. It is now blocked to cars and is offers spectacular views over the city and the island of Lokrum as well as breathtaking cliffs and the coastline. It is also possible to see all the way to the airport and the town of Cavtat, well worth a stroll. Source: Dubrovnik Times
