Nothing like the hotel website!
2010-02-06

When we arrived at The Grand Park at 12pm we were told that check in was not until 2pm.Slightly annoying when you have been up since 3:30am but fair enough, if the room is not ready theres not a lot you can do about it so we hung around for two hours and waited. From our first impressions of the hotel and its lobby, bar etc, it seemed promising enough. However when we finally made it into the room we were disappointed. The hotel is divided into three sections: the main building and two villas. We knew that we were staying in one of the villas but we were not prepared for just how basic the room would be. It looked nothing like the pictures on the hotel website and if it had been recently renovated I would have hated to have stayed there before! There were lots of cobwebs, the wallpapered border was peeling off and the bathroom was very old fashioned and covered in 1970s style orange tiles! After looking at some other travellers photos on here, I can only assume that the rooms are nicer in the main hotel buildings and in hindsight I wish we had booked one of these. If you are staying here I would definitely request a room in the main hotel and one with a sea view, as the others are overlooking the car park. We had a nice view from our villa but no balcony, and the other villa overlooked a building sight! We had also requested a non-smoking room but when we arrived we were told that they didnt exist- all the rooms are smoking so we had to put up with the smell of stale cigarettes for a week.

After unpacking and storing our valuables in the electronic safe, we explored the area. The hotels location is probably the best thing about it; there are a few nice restaurants and bars in Lapad and it is a pleasant place to be in the evening if you dont feel like venturing into Dubrovnik itself. The view from the beach is stunning and the bus stop is close to the hotel. We found the bus service reliable and efficient and Dubrovnik itself is lovely. If you do feel like spending the evening here, the bus runs until around 3am!

After an evening exploring the area, we woke on our first day to discover that our safe would not open; slight panic as tickets, money, phones etc were all inside. We reported it to reception who were extremely blas about the whole thing but sent a technician to fix it. Around six different technicians attempted to fix the problem and eventually the safe had to be drilled into! A new safe was fitted around two hours later and the head technician was extremely apologetic. However not a single member of management even approached us to apologise for not only the worry we were caused but losing most of our first day. This set the scene for most of the staff really- quite rude and acted like you were causing a massive hassle just by being there. Also be warned that there are no do not disturb signs so be prepared for the maids knocking on your door if you dare to sleep in longer than 8:30!

Overall, Dubrovnik is a very pretty place but I would not stay at this hotel again.

Lovely Hotel

The reception staff were fantastic, the location was brilliant, facilities good, lovely pool area (although people kept leaving their towels on loungers all day meaning it was near impossible to get a seat by the pool even during quiet times) room was lovely, big, quiet, clean and relaxing with good temperature control. >>> more
Very disappointing

I know this is not everyones experience but this is how we found it. The rooms are lovely and modern (although not cleaned very thoroughly). We had the best sea view ever but i'm not sure that makes up for the cramped room >>> more
