Hotel Lapad

Four Star Hotels
Hotel Lapad is one of the oldest hotels in the Dubrovnik region and has a long and wealthy tradition. In 2008 the hotel was completely renovated. Hotel Lapad is situated on the eastern side of the Dubrovnik peninsular and the old wing of the hotel is a perfect example of traditional Dubrovnik architecture. The distance from the hotel to the centre of the Old City is around 2 – 3 kilometres and a popular beach is a 15 minute walk away.

Hotel Lapad has a total of 157 elegantly furnished rooms and 6 apartments. All rooms are fully air-conditioned, the majority have a balcony and the luxurious superior rooms have both a balcony and a sea view. All rooms also contain a safe and Internet connection. Apart from the main hotel restaurant there is also a garden restaurant, TV salon and aperitif bar. For the guests of the hotel there is an outside swimming pool at their disposal. Through the summer months the hotel organises entertainment and live music, fun in the pool and once a week there are “Dalmatian Evenings”.

For those guests who wish to experience “real local life” in Dubrovnik there are small boats outside the hotel which will take you to the local market. There you can see a spectrum of colours, scents and tastes as the local produce is sold, from fresh juicy fruit and vegetables to local wines and spirits. Hotel Lapad is a great choice for those companies looking to organise smaller seminars and presentations as a conference hall with a capacity for 70 people is contained in the hotel.
Hotel Lapad is open during the season from early spring to the autumn.

Compromise location - Think about where you want to be and what you want to do
2010-02-06

The Hotel Lapad is good value. But it is not in the best location (it is a L1 bus ride to the old town, a good walk to the beach and it is outside of the small town of Lapad with its banks and shops, where the majority of the bars and restaurants are, and it is on a busy one-way road with no pavement.) It was an OK base to tour the area from, as its proximity to Gruz harbour also makes it easy to reach the Eliphite islands. But I didn't find it the most relaxing hotel to stay in, and it felt a bit of an effort to get into Dubrovnik every evening for dinner. The roads / local drivers did not make it feel safe to wander outside the hotel in the evening after dark. So I did feel that we would have been better staying in Cavtat -which is more attractive - or closer to Lapad Bay, so that we didn't feel so trapped in the hotel in the evening.
Advantages / Positives
- light, good sized bedroom, with sofa
- good sized pool which is behind high locked gate during day to maintain privacy
- easy access to Dubrovnik (two bus options - outside the hotel or a 10 minute walk down the road)
- short walk uphill to Lapad (for supermarket, bank and bars and restaurants)
- a la carte option available on terrace
- breakfast (good options - better, freshly cooked veg than available for dinner)
- friendly staff
- free internet (one PC near bar - often occupied and eratic connection)
- private hotel parking
- good view of Gruz harbour (where the majority of the cruise ships moor - some can be seen the other side of the old town, off the Lopud island) and the new bridge

Disadvantages / Negatives
- paying (charge not deposit) to use thin, ripped hotel towels at the pool
- small balcony (only room for one person/one chair) which means that it is difficult to make full use of, depsite paying for the privilege
- lack of privacy in room (glass wall between bathroom and bedroom)
- cold pool and distance from beach (uphill / steep steps to access)
- not an easy / pleasant walk to Dubrovnik old town
- not as close as other Lapad hotels to the coast and facilities of Lapad Bay; not in an area where it felt comfortable or safe to go for an evening stroll, and not close to nice bars
- dining room is large, harshly lit conservatory. There is no outside dining option for buffet diners (breakfast and dinner) as the Garden Restaurant is only available a la carte (and this offers no veggie option)
- dinner (not hot; and although we could ask for vegetarian sauces to be made for pasta, this was always the same and got monotonous)
- more modern than photos would lead you to believe: the two accommodation wings behind the Victorian-style facade are very modern, and the insde of the hotel lacks the character suggested by the outside style
- small, corridor-like indoor bar; outdoor bar dominated by smokers and impacted by 'entertainment'

Hotel Lapad, situated on the harbour with a car park if you choose to hire a car - we didn't - it was an easy 20 minute taxi ride costing a standard 250 K's from Dubrovnik airport. >>> more
