Hotel Berkeley

Three Star Hotels
Hotel Berkeley is a brand new hotel in Dubrovnik opened fully in 2007. It is located in the Gruž area of the city, which is a business and shopping area. There are excellent connections with the centre of town and the nearby port which makes this hotel a perfect base for those looking to explore the local islands as well as the Old City and surroundings.

Apart from that Hotel Berkeley is a good choice for business people travelling to Dubrovnik or those stopping off in Dubrovnik as part of a longer journey. The main port is around 150 meters from the hotel and the main bus terminal is within easy walking distance as is the connection to the airport.

One of the characteristics of hotel Berkeley is that, apart from the 9 standard rooms, the hotel has 15 apartments of which 8 look out over the Bay of Gruž. All of the rooms of Hotel Berkeley have a balcony or terrace, are air-conditioned, have tea and coffee making facilities, have satellite TV and a telephone. The hotel is renowned for its rich and varied breakfasts. Guests arriving to Hotel Berkeley arriving by car have at their disposal garage parking. Hotel Berkeley is open throughout the whole year and is the ideal choice for those looking for a well connected hotel as well as for business people seeking a base in Dubrovnik.

Convenient location, friendly service
2010-02-07

My wife and I stayed here for 12 nights in a studio room with sea view.

The free pick-up from the airport was excellent, though we were not offered a free transfer back, did not like to ask, and used the airport bus instead. This leaves from the long-distance bus station a few minutes' walk down the road and is very cheap so was not much of an inconvenience. But you have to check the times the day before as they change daily.

The hotel's location is excellent. We soon found there were actually 2 different bus routes into Dubrovnik - the no 8 from almost opposite the hotel taking you to the north side of the town, and the numbers 1A and 1B from the port area just down the road to the west side. Buses are cheap, reliable and frequent, and the journey only takes 10 minutes or less, so there is no need to walk. The hotel is also 15 minutes' walk from the medium-distance bus station which has buses to Cavtat (the 10) and Trsteno (the 12), though the receptionists did not seem aware of the 12 (or the 8 for that matter!). Finally, the ferry to the Elaphite Islands is also just down the road and the Jadrolinija ferry office there seems to stay open all hours. Try to get ferries rather than day excursions: they're vastly cheaper.

Back to the hotel. Our room was OK, with a wonderful view of the Harbour, though our TV only worked properly each day once you had removed all the plugs and re-inserted them. The hair dryer didn't work but was immediately replaced when we advised reception. All the Receptionists were friendly and helpful.

The kitchenette was very useful for having meals in, which we did every other night. But bear in mind the facilities are VERY limited (at least they were in our room): you only get 2 electric rings, a large saucepan and lid, large frying pan (so big that both pans cannot be used at the same time!), kettle, fridge, tea towel, scourer, washing up liquid, cutlery, crockery and glasses. Nothing else, so you have to improvise, buy it, or do without. But there is a large supermarket (Komzon) just down the road, which is very convenient.

(By the way, if you eat out, don't bother with anywhere in the Port area: we tried Petka and Zrinski and they were both pretty poor. Get the bus into Dubrovnik, very quick and easy, and you have a huge choice of good affordable restaurants there.)

Breakfast at the Hotel was OK, though tea/coffee is served immediately, you have to ask for toast, and the fried eggs and bacon weren't brilliant.

Overall, despite our negative comments, we were impressed, especially with the location and staff, and I suspect this hotel is much better than most of the bigger more impersonal places to stay.

Fantastic

This is a great hotel located in Gruz approx 3km from the Old Town in Dubrovnik. The frequent bus service means that you can be in the old town in 10 mins. >>> more
Great Hotel
2010-02-07

A good, clean hotel with friendly staff and good service. The hotel was located out of the town but given the frequent bus service from a nearby stop this wasn't a problem. It was also possible to buy bus tickets from the hotel which made it even easier. >>> more
