Lovely hotel, but !

We were two 60 + couples having a seven day holiday in Dubrovnik . I read the reviews, which generally were very good, and booked the hotel feeling confident in my choice.

The hotel was everything the reviews suggested. The place is smart, modern and very clean and it always had a lovely fragrant smell in the corridors. The room was spacious, well appointed and user friendly and suprisingly, as it isn't advertised, there were tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was equally good with nice toiletries and an emergency alarm in the bath/shower.

The breakfasts and evening meals were good in quality and choice but they were very much the same each day, an understandable problem with a small hotel.

The staff deserve a special mention as they really were excellent.
They were pleasant and helpful and we had a great time with our waitress in the restaurant.

BUT ! now for the subjective comments that others may or may not agree with.

The hotel is lacking in " holiday hotel " atmosphere. Guests don't stay around the hotel or sit and chat to each other. It was midweek before we found out that there was a bar sitting area.

Drinks in the hotel are fairly expensive, even bottled water. On the first night we had a bottle of wine with our meal. The cheapest wine on the list was about L23, we didn't have another !
Bottled beers were also relatively expensive. Other people, beside us, bought drinks outside and took them in to drink on the balcony. This is not really what you want to do though. We went to other hotels nearby, including sister hotels, and the prices there were cheaper.

While we were there, the hotel hosted at least three business conferences. If you stayed around the pool and wanted a lunch and a drink on the terrace, you would feel uncomfortable among all the business suits. We concluded that this was why the drinks were expensive, as they were priced for expense accounts.

It is a great hotel but we felt afterwards that it falls down trying to be both a holiday hotel and a conference centre. It's a pity.

The big question is of course would i go back to this hotel and despite all it's good qualities, the answer sadly is no.

As soon as we arrived at this hotel I felt right at home. Having a late check-in I was a bit nervous as to the reception we would receive, however when I saw the smiling assistant behind the front counter, I knew we had chosen the right hotel. >>> more

Quiet Hotel, with helpful staff and fabulous views across Lapad Bay. 2010-02-06

Booked hotel for first three nights of our holiday in Croatia, on hotels.com, paid L2 per day supplement for sea view, most of the rooms in the hotel do have a good view, however, as we had paid the supplement, we were upgraded to a superior room, with massive balcony and large lounge area. >>> more
